Sony Open, Second Round

Luckily Zach Johnson rallied back after a horrible triple-bogey 6 to shoot a good round of 67 to get him to 8-under for the tournament. But it's Ryan Palmer in the lead heading to the weekend after a real solid 65, 66 start.

Some other notables inside the Top 10 are Robert Allenby (-8), Chad Campbell (-8), Steve Stricker (-7), Davis Love III (-6), and Angel Cabrera (-6). Campbell's bogey-free 64 today is the best round so far.

As for the reigning major winners:
Angel Cabrera: 66, 68 (T8th)
Y.E. Yang: 70, 69 (T39th)
Stewart Cink: 68, 72 (T59th)
Lucas Glover: 75, 69 (MC)

It's the long-hitting Cabrera leading the way.

Some notables to miss the cut are: Luke Donald (+2), Justin Leonard (+2), Bill Horschel (+4), Lucas Glover (+4), John Daly (+5), Stuart Appleby (+5), and Rickie Fowler (+7).

My predictions for over the weekend are going to have to be that Johnson, Stricker, Campbell, and Allenby. All are great ballstrikers, and on these smaller greens you need to be precise. I think Zach Johnson has all of the tools to repeat. As well as Stricker.

A guy who I think will make a jump up the leaderboard on Saturday is Pat Perez at 4-under. He's a guy who can really tally up numberous birdies every day.

I'll be back with an update tomorrow after the round.

Sony Open, First Round

My four Yahoo Fantasy picks were Zach Johnson, YE Yang, David Toms, and Matt Kuchar. Solid first rounds by all 4. My bench was Mark Wilson, Pat Perez, Bryce Molder, and Rickie Fowler. It looks like 5 of the 8 will make the cut. Okay, but definitely not a great way to start the season. I'm probably going to end up putting Pat Perez and Mark Wilson in the starting lineup for moving day. Along with Zach Johnson. Unfortunately both of my C-list players are going to miss the cut.

I really like how the tournaments transfer from a wide open, par 73, huge green course like Kapalua, to a tight, winding, par 70, small green course like Waialae. It really makes the players think about where to put their tee shots, which is why I picked some players who can find the fairway (Yang, Toms, Johnson, Wilson).

Oh yeah, and how could I forget, Long John makes his return to the Tour. And he greets us with his normal greeting... a missed cut. What's up with the painter's cap? It was cool to see Ricky Barnes rockin' it, but John Daly? He should be wearing a cowboy hat.

I'll be back later on to update on the second round, and ridicule Daly's stylish apparel. I'm sorry but those pants just don't do it for me.

Cheers!

The PGA Tour says "Aloha"

The PGA Tour officially kicked off about 8 1/2 days ago. After a sad weekend for Lucas Glover, Geoff Ogilvy wins his second straight tournament at Kapalua.
